Collectors’ Guide: Where to Find the Rarest Luxury Watches in New Orleans

By Brett Thomas

When you’ve been collecting watches in New Orleans as long as I have, you learn a few things:

  1. The second line never starts on time.

  2. Red beans are always better on Monday.

  3. And the rarest New Orleans luxury watches are never sitting in plain sight — you’ve got to know where to look.

After decades in the hunt, I’ve figured out the back alleys, back rooms, and yes, back counters where the best timepieces hide. So if you’re looking to score that rare Rolex, Omega, or Patek in the Crescent City, pull up a chair and let me spill the secrets.

The French Quarter: More Than Beads and Beignets

Everybody knows the Quarter for jazz, bourbon (the drink and the street), and tourists who think flip-flops count as formal wear. But tucked between the antique shops and art galleries, you’ll find dealers who occasionally get their hands on serious timepieces.

If you’re lucky, you might stumble on a vintage Rolex Submariner in the same block where someone’s selling voodoo dolls. That’s New Orleans for you — equal parts mystery and magic.

Uptown Jewelers: Old Money, Timeless Taste

Want to see how New Orleans high society tells time? Head uptown. Jewelers on Magazine Street and St. Charles Avenue often keep their rarest watches off display. These aren’t the ones they put under the bright glass for window shoppers. You’ll need to build a relationship, ask the right questions, and maybe even come back a few times before they show you the really good stuff.

Pro tip: Dress sharp. Walk in wearing a Panerai or a TAG Heuer, and suddenly the conversation changes. (Trust me, they know who’s serious and who’s just killing time before happy hour.)

The Secret Weapon: Estate Sales and Auctions

Here’s something most collectors overlook: estate sales in New Orleans. Families who’ve been here for generations often have treasures tucked away in drawers. When those pieces surface, they can include anything from rare Omega Seamasters to Audemars Piguet Royal Oaks.

Auctions, too, are a gold mine. Just be ready to raise your paddle high and fast — competition is fierce. Think of it as Mardi Gras, but instead of beads, you’re fighting for a Daytona.

Private Collectors (Yes, Guys Like Me)

One of the most underrated ways to find New Orleans luxury watches is by connecting with other collectors. Guys like me have pieces that never hit the open market. We trade, we sell, we tell stories over cigars. Sometimes, the best way to find the rarest watches is just being in the right room with the right people.

That’s part of why I built NolaTimeMachines.com
